Olweus Anti-bullying Program

The Olweus Bully Prevention Program is a universal, school-wide effort involving all adults and students in a school. It is designed to be implemented and sustained over time to change school climate and social norms. The program is evidence-based and supported by a large body of research. Olweus was introduced to the district by Mr. Anthony Lubrano, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction, and with the full support of the Board of Education, especially Vice President Brenda Judson. “The Olweus program seeks to include everyone who has an impact on a child’s life - school, classroom, individual, community and parents,” explained Mr. Lubrano.

HHS Sends 12 to All-County Music Festival

Hicksville High School sent 12 of its top student-musicians to the 2020 Nassau Music Educators Association All-County Music Festival, held at the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts in mid-January. The festival brings music students together from schools throughout Nassau County.

Elementary schools launch anti-bullying program

The Hicksville School District kicked off the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program at the Board of Education meeting on Jan. 22. Olweus is a program designed for students that aims to reduce existing bullying problems, prevent the development of new issues and achieve better peer relations at school. All elementary schools in the district have adopted the Olweus program.

Looking east at sunrise guides us as we prepare for the day ahead – so too, does its namesake elementary school in Hicksville as its students look to the future. “This is a wonderful school with a long and important history in Hicksville,” explained Principal Jean-Marie Serra, now in her 22nd year as East Street’s educational leader. “There is a certain sparkle to this place. Its façade seems to open its arms to welcome everyone.”

Telling Our Story: Dutch Lane Elementary

One of four “sister” schools opened in 1952 to address Hicksville’s population boom – Burns, Dutch, Fork and Old Country Road – Dutch Lane has a rich history of being integral to the community and holding tight to those who have passed through its doors. “One example of our deep, long lasting relationships at Dutch is our current PTA President, Mrs. Weih,” said Principal Janine Rossi. “Amazingly, the family has had someone attending the school every year since it opened its doors in 1952.”

Telling Our Story: Burns Avenue Elementary
